Terence Haunch - 60 year Chapter Certificate presentation

On Thursday 27th March 2008, at a meeting of St. Stephen’s Chapter, Retford, the Grand Superintendent, J N G Howitt presented a 60 year certificate to Excellent Companion Terrance Osborne haunch, P.S.G.Soj. whilst at the same time the Chapter conferred honorary membership for the forthcoming year.
The attached photograph shows the principals of the Chapter wearing headdresses and breastplate unique to this chapter.
Terence was born in Yorkshire, educated in Retford and at the University of Sheffield.
He served during WW2 with the Royal Artillery from 1939 to 1946, being demobilised with the rank of Major. He resumed his studies at University and graduated in 1949 with a BA degree in Architecture. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1948 and took his MA in 1950.
He was initiated into Vernon Lodge No. 1802 when his father Bro. Bro M S Haunch was a member in 1942, on the same day as his brother – DB Haunch – but due to his service was passed and raised in the Sir Reginald Wingate Lodge no. 2954 in Khartoum.
He was installed Master of Vernon Lodge in 1954. After promotions he became P.Pr.J.G.W. in 1966 and P.A.G.Supt of Wks in 1972 and P.D.G.Supt of Wks in 1983. Also during this period whilst serving as a Charted Architect in local government in Nottinghamshire, his knowledge and interest in Masonic research qualified him to accept the position of Assistant Librarian to the United Grand Lodge of England being promoted in 1973 to Librarian and Curator.
He was Master of the Notts Installed Masters Lodge No. 3595 in 1954 and was editor of the Lodge Transactions from 1956 to 1966. He was also the Librarian and secretary of the Notts. Masonic Study Circle from 1960 to 1966,
He joined the Correspondence Circle of the Quator Coronati Lodge in 1948, elected a full member in 1964 and became master in 1969. Full membership of this Lodge of research, which is restricted to 40 members, is extended by invitation only to Brethren who have carried out distinguished work in Masonic study or in the arts, literature and science. He was appointed the Prestonian Lecturer for 1972
Terence was exhalted in St. Stephens Chapter on 27th November 1947 and became First Principal on 24th October 1957, was promoted to P.Pr.G.S.N. on 1966 and P.G.Std.B. on 1975. In 1985 he was further promoted to P.A.G.Soj. (He was 90 years og age on 12th May 2008)
He was advance in Galway Mark lodge no. 940 in 1953, became Master in 1968 and advanced to the 30th degree in 1971 and was promoted to P.Pr.G.J.W.
He was perfected in Nottingham Chapter Rose Croix No 17 in 1958. Was a founder member of Castle gates Chapter No. 653 meeting in London in 1968 and was advanced to the 30th degree in 1971.
A truly remarkable Masonic Career and a honour to know him.
