Provincial Presentation to Macmillan Nurses and Rainbows Hospice
Ladies attending the Festive Board at the Christmas meeting of Commercial Lodge No.411 were treated to a fascinating audio visual presentation about the Charity, "Hoveraid". Hoveraid (Registered Charity No.1005977) is a Christian charity which works, in conjunction with other relief agencies, to ferry provisions, medical supplies and other relief items to areas of the world which are inaccessible by other forms of surface transport. It is frequently the case, in the wake of hurricanes or other natural disasters, that roads are either washed away or are otherwise impassable and only rivers and lakes remain clear. The flexibility of the hovercraft, as a means of transport, allows it to use the rivers as the arterial routes into a region and also to pull onto low lying riverside land to discharge its cargo of goodwill, when the stricken area is reached. The talk was given to the ladies by a long standing non-masonic friend of Commercial Lodge, Roger Mayo, whose son helps to lead the charity's work and who also skippers one of the craft in Madagascar where regular flooding often leaves villages marooned amidst hundreds of square miles of swamp and mud flats. Following the talk, the Worshipful Master of Commercial Lodge, W Bro Phillip Bayliss, presented Roger with a cheque for £250 to help to support the Charity. In presenting the cheque, W Bro Bayliss said, "This is a very practical way for the Charity to show God's love for humanity and Commercial Lodge is pleased to be able to support the work" The donation is to be added to the sponsorship monies raised on behalf of the Charity by Richard Wheat who, despite serious illness, ran the New York Marathon, raising a total of over £1000 Further information on Hoveraid can be obtained by visiting www.hoveraid.org.uk and Roger Mayo is happy to attend any function, any Lodge meeting (after calling off), or event to give the presentation.
