MASONIC LADIES LUNCHEON CLUB

Report by Jean Gibb, December 2008

The luncheon club meets on the third Monday of every month except August, gathering at Goldsmith Street at 10.30 for a coffee and a chat. The luncheon menu is varied, a hot and a cold option always being available.

This coming year, 2009, we will have a speaker at every meeting excepting for March, our AGM.

Last year, 2008, we began the year by inviting Pam wisher to tell us “How to grow old disgracefully”, a very informative and amusing talk which made us think that perhaps it is a good idea to say “no” occasionally, when asked to do something which we really feel disinclined to do.

Pam Howe, my elder daughter came from Kettering to give us advice on “Combating hospital acquired infections”. Everyone agreed that she gave us food for thought, should we be unfortunate enough to have to stay in hospital. However we were happy in the knowledge that all medical staff are working very hard to keep hospitals clear of infection.

Jennie Storr came from Lincoln and spoke in her bright and breezy style about a day out at Eden Hall Health Club with her daughter. As usual she made us laugh heartily at the activities which the two of them enjoyed

Katie came gain to show her pretty costume jewellery, and I suspect that many of us succumbed and bought a variety of necklaces and bracelets. She very kindly gave us a very attractive handbag for our Christmas raffle.

Paul Selby ensured that those who drive “Arrive Alive”. As we had all passed our driving tests some years ago, he challenged our knowledge of the Highway Code. Fortunately our memories are still good. It was a timely reminder of all the essential rules to keep us, and others, safe on the road.

Graham Wood gave us a insight into his time as a Fire Officer. June Kirkham was his superb model whom he dressed in full fire-fighters’ kit.

David Mellor presented us with a history lesson, He spoke of the Chaworth-Musters family from the seventeenth century, and their names in the roads in West Bridgford.

Co-optima gave us an enjoyable and seasonal concert in both song and verse, before we ate a very tasty Christmas Luncheon.

This year we were pleased to give a substantial sum to Charity, £325 to Hayward House, £60 to Cancer research, £300 to Nottingham Hospice, and to the Notts and Lincs Air Ambulance £156 which June Kirkham raised when she hosted a Coffee Morning
