Masons on a crest of a wave
# By Bro. Ken Eley & W. Bro. David Taylor on 6th December, 2011, in Site News Events
In March 2011 Nottinghamshire Scouts and Guides with their red scarves celebrated 60 years of Gang Shows with a lavish production at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham. Since those early days with only a male cast and produced by the legendary Ralph Reader (a Mason see below), the shows have evolved into the productions seen today all over the world. This latest show in Nottingham was the 28th to be staged in the City and contained the usual mix of show numbers and sketches with the Cubs and Brownies stealing the show. As in the past a lot of Scouting and Guiding adults give up a lot of time to coach and supervise the young people during rehearsals, which started in September 2010, and during the show itself as well as some of them taking part as members of the cast. Amongst these adults this year were a number of Brethren, who are pictured back stage during the show. They are members of Fairham Lodge No. 8002, Semper Fratres Lodge No. 4467 and Walesby Forest Lodge No. 9674. There were also several partners and children of Brethren involved as well. The show was a great success and raised funds for Nottinghamshire Scouts and Guides as well as being a lot of fun for all concerned. Roll on 2013 for the next one, auditions start in September 2012.
Ralph was initiated into Juventus Lodge No. 6473 in 1956 and became a founder of Red Scarf Lodge No. 8448, a Lodge for those who had been involved in Gang Shows, in 1972. His adopted son, Bob Corp-Reader, was initiated into Venturer Lodge No. 7897, Essex, and became MetGChStwd.
